SunKid has installed a new, 111 metre-long wonder carpet with a gallery enclosure covering the length of the conveyor belt:
The Scuol Motta Naluns lifts expand their children's ski facilities
The family-friendly ski area in SCUOL expanded their offerings for children and beginners this 2008/2009 winter season by installing a new conveyor belt. With the support of SunKid, planning and concept design for the project began a year in advance of implementation. The Scuol lift operators decided on a 111 metre-long wonder carpet, as well as the gallery enclosure that covers it. The result is a new wonder carpet that creates a landscape accent visible across the slopes...

Planning the children's facilities with SunKid
The Scuol Motta Naluns lift operators began planning and concept design for expanding their children's facilities a year in advance of the project implementation. Offering years of experience and expertise, SunKid worked beside the Scuol lift operators from the beginning, providing valuable consultation and support. In the end, the operators decided to enhance their existing facilities built by SunKid and dating from 2001 with an additional 111 metre-long wonder carpet.
And as a special service to the guests of the Scuol lifts, the operators decided to add the SunKid gallery enclosure over the 111 metre-long installation. The enclosure protects passengers from wind, rain, snow, and cold. The operators benefit from the increased operating safety provided by the enclosure, as well as reduced maintenance requirements - a significant savings.
Description of the SunKid gallery enclosure:
- Modular construction with no part heavier than 25kg. As such, the entire gallery can be erected and taken down by two people.
- Passage width: max. 2.2 m – interior height: 2.3 m
- Entry and exit points located every 1.8m, with a passage width of 1.2m - closable by a self-rolling, lorry-quality tarp cover.
- Specially-constructed and manufactured aluminium beams with the following advantages:
- Minimal weight (one module weighs 25kg and can be moved by one person)
- High load-bearing strength (wind speeds up to 185 km/h, snow loads up to 1m)
- Polycarbonate panes can be fixed without drill holes or bolts
- High-quality, UV-resistant polycarbonate panes (3mm thick)
- A coupling between the aluminium modules enables fitting the unit to concave and convex terrain up to +/- 5% per 3m
- A 40cm gangway width extension on both sides, using the standard, tested SunKid technique: solid metal construction with high-quality snow-fleece covering
- Robust, galvanised side rails running 20 cm higher than the conveyor belt and snow surface to prevent damage to the polycarbonate panes caused by snow grooming machines, cleaning tools, and winter sports equipment.
- Locking doors provide a closure of high-quality aluminium beam construction
- Visual customisation (tarp covers can be delivered in all RAL colours)
- The system can also be retrofitted onto already installed conveyor belts

- Entry and exit points are located every 1.8m in the conveyor belt enclosure,

In order to further increase the operating safety, a 2m-deep light well was installed underneath the drive station. Equipped with a heater and drainpipe, the well quickly and easily melts the snow that falls inside, thereby avoiding the need to clear away snow around the drive station and minimising regular upkeep.
Great experiences with SunKid
The early experiences this winter season on the Scuol lifts were very positive. Children and adults are very pleased with the expansions undertaken in the children and beginner's area. "We could always rely on SunKid and received only the best support for concept design, planning, meeting regulatory requirements, and installation!", exclaims Arno Neuhäusler, the technical director for the Scuol lifts.
